Alimentation du merlan Merlangius merlangus L. en Mer Celtique ArchiMer
Du Buit, Marie-henriette; Merlina, Frédéric.
The importance of predation by the whiting (Merlangius merlangus ) from the Celtic Sea has been studied by analysis of stomach contents. Eight hundred and thirteen whitings have been examined during 1984-1986 period. Fish food totalizes 97% of food. It is chiefly a swimming species: no cannibalism has been observed. The daily food index varies between 2 and 4% according to the length and the annual consumption on fishes of nominal catches (11230 t for 1983) would reach 135,000 t corresponding to species already fished for human consumption and the fish meal industry.

Campagnes expérimentales de chalutage en Manche orientale. Les campagnes C.G.F.S. 1997 & 1998 ArchiMer
Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck.
lfremer carries out a yearly bottom trawl survey named Channel Ground Fish Survey (CGFS) in order to collect essential biological data on major exploited fish species in the Eastern Channel. These data are also provided to feed the indispensable historie series to the yearly assessment of resources. This report presents results of the CGFS surveys for 1997 and 1998, under two aspects: a multispecific approach of the biological assemblages and integrating an interannual analysis, then a monospecific analysis of 7 species of commercial interest, as whiting, pout, cod, red gurnard, plaice, black bream, red mullet. Improving gear selectivity of whiting ( Merlangius merlangus ) on board French demersal trawlers in the English Channel and North Sea ArchiMer
Vogel, Camille; Kopp, Dorothee; Morandeau, Fabien; Morfin, Marie; Mehault, Sonia.
In the English Channel and Southern Bight, French demersal trawlers target a mix of demersal species including whiting (Merlangius merlangus). The discard ban to be implemented in January 2016 motivated fishermen to look for technical measures to reduce unwanted catches of undersized individuals (<27 cm). From 2008–2014, 18 different gear configurations were tested for bycatch reduction on board fleets of vessels of 16–20 m and 20–24 m. Selective devices tested included grids, square mesh panels (SMP), square mesh cylinders (SMC), various combinations of these devices and large mesh trawls. Using the catch comparison method, our results focus on six devices that proved efficient to reduce catches of undersized whiting, equally divided between the two...

Observations sur la répartition et l’abondance du merlan Merlangius merlangus (Gadidae) en Manche orientale à partir des données des campagnes CGFS ArchiMer
Carpentier, Andre.
Since 1988, the IFREMER Fisheries Resources Laboratory in Boulogne-sur-Mer is carrying out a pluriannual project in the Eastern Channel to estimate, directly and by age groups, the abundance and the recruitment of species of commercial interest. These data are obtained during an annual trawl survey (taking place in October) which gives indications about the fish populations distribution and allows to get biological informations needed for stock assessments. The present study aimed to analyse the distribution and the abundance of whiting (Merlangius merlangus). In the Channel, this species is one of the most exploited by the French small-scale fishery. The results showed that the whiting distribution was mainly restricted to shallow waters in October and...
